Frances Balkcom Obituary

Funeral services for Frances Hortense Castellow Balkcom, 92, were held Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 at Georgetown Methodist Church at 10 a.m. CDT. The Rev. Ken Carpenter conducted the service with Chapman Funeral Home directing.

Hortense died in Abbeville on Aug. 13, 2012. She was born on Feb. 6, 1920, in Hatcher, Ga. She was the daughter of the late John Fred Castellow and Exa Mullins. She attended Tift College in Forsythe, Ga. and was a lifelong musician, playing both the piano and organ at Georgetown Methodist Church for over 60 years.

She was a charter member of Camerata Music Club of Eufaula and a longtime member of the Georgetown Garden Club. She gave countless hours to the American Heart Association and to the Georgetown Parent Teacher Association.

She was married to the late Henry Lewis Balkcom, Jr. and survived by their three children, Eleanor Balkcom Hinton (Jack), Ann Balkcom Mitchell (Ben), and Henry Lewis Balkcom III (Cynthia). She was preceded in death by their youngest son, Edward Castellow Balkcom. She also had 12 grandchildren, Dee Hinton Smith (Lehman), Jack B. Hinton, Jr. (Sonja), Henry Balkcom Hinton (Carolyn), Matthew Lewis Mitchell (Deana), Logan Balkcom Mitchell (Rosie), Joanna Mitchell Jardina, Christopher Edward Mitchell (Holly), Henry Lewis Balkcom IV (Claudia), Andrew Carter Balkcom, Sadie Balkcom Neville (Art), Edward Castellow Balkcom II, (Rebecca), and Frances Hortense Balkcom Raines (Alan). She also had 30 great-grandchildren.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff and nurses of Henry County Health and Rehabilitation for the exceptional care they rendered for the last three years, to Dr. Melvin Oakley of Eufaula for his excellent care while serving as Hotense's family physician for many years, and to Wealthy Bland, her beloved friend and faithful companion for the last several years.

Serving as pallbearers were Hortense's grandsons previously listed. Donations in Hortenses's memory may be sent to the Georgetown Methodist Church, the Georgetown Baptist Church, the Camerata Club or to a charity of your choice.

Mrs. Balkcom was a very sweet spirit and will be miss dearly. I loved being one of her caregivers 4 years ago and we had more good days than bad. I often speak of her when I'm talking to coworkers or friends about when I used to be a caregiver with home instead. She will always have a special place in my heart and may God be with the family with comfort and love during this difficult time.

Mrs. Balkcom will be missed dearly by the staff here at Henry County Health and Rehab. She kept us busy while she was here doing everything from putting on make-up to making sure her jewelry was positioned just right. To the family, remember all the good times and the beautiful songs she played on the piano and I am sure a smile will come across your face each time.

God has taken a very special friend of mine to her heavenly home and I am surely going to miss her love and laughter and expecially her talent for singing and playing the piano. She will be doing the same up there with the angels. God Bless all of her family that loved her so much too!!!
