Edwin Gillman Obituary

HANOVER Edwin Gillman, 90, of West Manheim Township, Hanover, died Saturday, November 24, 2012, at The Brethren Home, Cross Keys Village. Edwin was born on June 15, 1922, in Nutley, New Jersey, the son of John Ernest Gillman and Katie Columbia Reif. Edwin was employed for over 45 years by Worthington Pump Company where he advanced from Machinist to Application Engineer. He was also a licensed Gunsmith for over 60 years and enjoyed making sporting rifles out of military rifles. He was an avid hunter and traveled within the United States and Canada as well as to Namibia and Zimbabwe in pursuit of big game animals. He was a member of Safari Club International, a life member of Green Springs Rod & Gun Club and a life member of the National Rifle Association. Edwin was a Master Mason and Member of Silentia Lodge in Butler, New Jersey. He was also a member of The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, as well as Member and Zone Chairman of the West Manheim Lions Club. He remained actively engaged with these organizations until his recent illness. Staff Sergeant Gillman served his country during World War II as a waist gunner in a B17. He was stationed in Fogia, Italy and shot down by German anti-aircraft weapons on his third mission. He was listed as Missing In Action, but eventually returned to the 463rd Bomb Group to participate in 25 bombing runs over Germany including a successful mission to bomb Berlin. He recently told some of his WWII stories at a Tribute to World War II Veterans hosted by the Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society and his presentation can be viewed on YouTube. Edwin was also a member of Hanover VFW Post 2506, The American Legion and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Edwin was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys May Gillman, an infant son, Ronald Gillman, and his only brother, Christopher John Gillman. He is survived by three daughters, Debra Gillman of Spring Grove, Janice Kline and her husband Steven of Chambersburg, and Wendy Gillman and her husband Antonius Deenan of Mount Joy; two sons, Robert Gillman and his wife Maggie Bishop of Boone, NC, and Edwin C. Gillman and his wife Tina Crone of Elizabethtown; nine grandchildren, Crystal Boetner, Kevin Loss, Stephanie Loss, Melanie Cicuto and her husband Bryan, Madisen, Nathen and Christien Bibler, and Bridgette and Bianca Gillman; two great grandchildren Savannah Vega and Landon Plopi. A service to celebrate and remember Edwin's life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, with his Pastor the Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, with the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard providing Military Honors. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Contributions in honor of Edwin may be made to the West Manheim Lion's Club Scholarship Fund, 2575 Baltimore Pike, Hanover, PA 17331.
