Reuel Zinn Obituary

HANOVER Reuel H. Zinn, Sr., 76, husband of Carole Grim Zinn, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 8, 2013, in Avow Hospice House, Naples, Fla., following a brief illness. Born on January 21, 1937 in Hanover, he was the only child of the late Harman E. and Evelyn Hoke Zinn. He attended Eichelberger High School and graduated in 1955 from St. Francis Preparatory School in Spring Grove and later received his degree in Radio Broadcasting from the RCA School in New York. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was instrumental in the Army's installation of the first radio tower in Puerto Rico. Involved in radio since the age of 13, he was affiliated with WHVR in Hanover, WSBA in York, and WGET in Gettysburg before becoming employed with the Voice of America, which is now the United States Information Agency, from which he retired in 1994 following over 20 years of service. He provided radio coverage of five presidents and their inaugurations and covered the Olympic Games from 1970-1992. Known as the "Voice of the Nighthawks," he announced home football games for the Hanover High School for more than 20 years and was an avid member of the Hanover Athletic Booster Club. Earlier in his life, Mr. Zinn earned the rank of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America and also served as a swim instructor with American Red Cross and a ski instructor at Roundtop Mountain Resort. He was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, where he served on the consistory for several years and was a lifelong member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Dedicated to the community, he served as Past Exalted Ruler of Hanover B.P.O.E #763, held membership with the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post #14 and the Hanover AmVets Post 22, and enjoyed his many activities within the Hanover Area Historical Society. In addition to being an avid Baltimore Orioles and Colts, now Ravens, fan, he was a supporter of Penn State University football. He had an eye for detail and a passion for history which made his enthusiasm for antique autos and collection of Lionel trains so fulfilling for him. In addition to his wife of 40 years, he is survived by a son, Reuel H. Zinn, Jr. and his wife, Rachel of Morgantown, W.Va.; a daughter, Ann Kress and her husband, Tim of Hanover; five grandchildren and several cousins. The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 124 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Mark Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military graveside rites being rendered by Hanover Veterans Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends and share memories from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Guthrie Memorial Library- Pennsylvania Room, where he often frequented, 2 Library Place, Hanover, PA 17331.
