HANOVER Ronald E. "Ron" Swartz, 80, passed peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Brethren Home, New Oxford. He was the loving husband of Marlene G. (Gruver) Swartz for 57 years. Born November 9, 1933, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Eugene W. and Elsie I. (Buchen) Swartz. Ron was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover. He was a Korean War Veteran
serving his country proudly in the U.S. Navy
from 1952 -1956 during Taskforce 77 on Aircraft Carrier "Lake Champlain". He was awarded the National Defense, Good Conduct, United Nations and Korean War medals. Ron was a member of VFW
Post 2506, Hanover, a Life member of Harold H. Bair American Legion Post #14, Hanover, a member of the Fairfield AMVETS, Hanover Eagles, Hanover Home Association and the B.P.O.Elks #763, Hanover. As a young man Ron delivered milk seven days a week from 1957 to 1962 for Royale Dairy which was owned by his grandmother Ellen Mae DePuy. He then worked as a salesman for Utz Potato Chip Co. from 1962 to 1997 retiring after 35 years of service. Ron also played the electric bass guitar for a number of Country Music Groups in the Hanover area. In addition to his wife Marlene, Ron is survived by three daughters, Tina Louise Swartz and her friend Michael Ponder of Camp Hill, Vicki L. Swartz of Hanover and Jodi L. Lafferty and her husband James of North Wales; two grandchildren, Zachary Heighway and his wife Melissa of Camp Hill and their children Tyler and Madelyn and Clinton Heighway and his friend Amanda Fairres of South Bend, Indiana and their daughter Summer; and a brother, Terrence L. Swartz and his wife Mary Ann of Cranberry, N.J. Ron was preceded in death by a grandson, Tyler Lafferty and a sister Darlis E. Swartz. A service to celebrate the life of Ronald E. Swartz will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover with Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be this evening, Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be: Michael Ponder, James Lafferty, Zachary Heighway, Clinton Heighway, and Terrence Swartz.
