Ruth E. Shaeffer

HANOVER Ruth E. (Hamme) Shaeffer, 100, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 9, 2013. She was the wife of the late George E. Shaeffer to whom she had been married 56 years. Born March 30, 1913, in Brodbecks, York County, she was a daughter of the late Milton and Lillie Mae (Smith) Hamme. Ruth was a graduate of Shippensburg University and did post graduate work at McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College and Penn State University. She taught in the Southwestern School District for nearly 30 years. Ruth was a life member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and a life member of AARP. Mrs. Shaeffer was a member of Lazarus United Church of Christ, Lineboro, Md., and a charter member of the Lineboro Friendship Club, where she was active for 52 years. Surviving are her son, Donald E. Shaeffer and wife, Pat of Hanover; her granddaughter, Lisa Sterner of Hanover; her grandson, Randy J. Shaeffer; her great-grandson, T.J. Sterner; and her granddaughter-in-law, Kelly Shaeffer. Also surviving are her brother, Leadder G. Hamme; and two sisters, Anna Mae Cline and Helen L. Ports. Ruth was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. A service to celebrate the life of Ruth E. (Hamme) Shaeffer will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Wetzel Funeral Home & Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, with Pastor Sam Chamelin officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
