Gary W. Pownell Obituary
JEFFERSON Gary W. Pownell, 69, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at York Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Christine W. (Warner) Pownell; they celebrated their 45th Wedding anniversary on December 2, 2012. Gary was born in Romney, W.Va., on March 9, 1943, the son of the late Paul G. Pownell and the late Nina (Saville) Pownell. His parents died when he was young and he lived with the late Alma and Lonnie Merritt. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He worked for SKF in Hanover for many years prior to retiring. After retiring he worked for Advanced Auto in Hanover and Southern School District. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Grove and Shiloh American Legion Post. Gary enjoyed traveling with his wife and playing Bingo, but cherished the time he spent with his family and close friends. In addition to his wife Christine; he is survived by his son, Paul G. Pownell and his wife, Rae Ann of Jefferson, his daughter, Julie A. Cox and her husband, Brian of Spring Grove; his grandchildren, Jennah and Gary Pownell and Kameron and Kierstyn Cox; his sisters, Mary Lee Brown of West Virginia and Velma Jean Woods of West Virginia; his brothers, Kenneth Merritt of West Virginia and Merle Merritt of Virginia, and many nieces and nephews and his special dog Maggie. He was predeceased by his brothers, Richard Pownell and Gerald Merritt and his sisters, Joanne Powell, Carolyn Coffey and Virginia Alexander. Family and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 146 N. Main St., Spring Grove, with Rev. Paul Schenck officiating. He will be laid to rest following the Mass at Jefferson Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewings will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service PC, 175 N Main St. Spring Grove.
