Guy M. Mitchell Jr. Obituary
HANOVER Guy M. Mitchell Jr., 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at the Hershey Medical Center. Born October 2, 1920, in Medford Mass., he was the son of the late Guy M. Mitchell and Ethel Bentley Mitchell and the loving husband of Madeline Rohrbaugh Mitchell, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. A 1942 graduate of Tufts University in Medford, Mass., Mitchell was a varsity wrestler and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He went on to become a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He had a successful career working as a sales representative in the leather industry. Mr. Mitchell was a deacon at Trinity United Church of Christ and a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, Post #763, and the Hanover Arcadian Club, as well as the Hanover Country Club, which he joined after moving to town in 1948. To say that Guy had a passion for the game of golf is an understatement! He scored a hole-in-one just days before his 90th birthday and played 3 times a week whenever possible. As an avid golfer, he also enjoyed watching and reading about the sport. A New Englander by birth and nature, he enjoyed winter sports, including skiing and ice skating, and throughout his life he loved vacationing on Long Island, Maine at the family cottage, Sunny Banks. In addition to his wife, Guy is survived by his immediate family: daughter, Susan Mitchell Sygitowicz and her husband James of Olympia, Wash.; daughter, Jane Mitchell Pianovich and her husband, Paul of Lykens; son, Richard L. Mitchell of New York, N.Y.; grandsons, Alexander Pianovich of New Orleans, La., and Stephen Pianovich of State College; and his sisters, Mary Ann Mitchell of Carbondale, Colo.; and Gretchen West of Eliot, Maine. He was preceded in death by his brother, Captain (USAAF) Richard B. Mitchell. Following cremation, a memorial service is being planned in July.
