EAST BERLIN John A. Roland, 95, died Friday, March 29, 2013, at the Brethren Home Community. He was the husband of the late Elva Louise Adleblute. He was born July 23, 1917, in East Berlin, the son of the late Nelson and Florence (Thompson) Roland. John was a life-long resident of East Berlin. He worked for ACCO for over 19 years, and retired as a member of the International Union or Operating Engineers, Local 542. John was a man of many interests. He enjoyed hunting, especially deer and small game hunting. He hunted until he was 93 years old. He was a fan of auto racing, especially dirt track sprint cars, and attended races at the Lincoln Speedway into his 90's. He was a former member of Liberty Fire Co., East Berlin, the NRA, the York County Racing Club, and the Williams Grove "Old Timers". John is survived by a son, John Robert Roland and his wife, Dolores of Red Lion; two grandchildren, Michelle Roland of Venice, Fla., and Jennifer Darney of Dillsburg; two great-grandchildren, Katarina Darney and Kyle Darney, both of Dillsburg; a brother, Charles Roland of Mechanicsburg; and a sister, Bernice Holder of Manchester. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Smith. Following cremation, a private celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family.
