HANOVER Raymond L. Gass, Jr., 85, entered into God's eternal care, Sunday, November 18, 2012, at his residence. He was the loving husband of June I. (Baublitz) Gass with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Born August 28, 1927, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Raymond L., Sr. and Norway L. (Heathcoat) Gass. Raymond was a 1946 graduate of Hanover High School where he played on the football team. He earned the nickname "Bruiser Gass" and was a member of the 1944 championship team. He served his country proudly as a Seaman, Second Class in the United States Navy from 1945-1946. In 1950, Mr. Gass was called to serve in the Korean War in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1952. Raymond retired from Young & Stine of York, as a floor installer after several years of service. He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Codorus. He was also a member of the Hanover Republican Club, the YMCA of Hanover and was a former member of the Hanover Lancers. Raymond continued to enjoy drum & bugle corp shows. Mr. Gass was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post #14 of Hanover as well as the Carpenters Local Union, #191. Raymond was an avid Penn State Football fan and was proud to receive a personal 80th birthday card from Joe Paterno. Most importantly, he enjoyed supporting all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their sporting events. In addition to his wife, June, Raymond is survived by his son, Raymond E. Gass and his wife Debra; his four daughters, Anna Yingling and her husband F. Richard, Theresa Shoemaker and her husband Earl, Carlyn Almony and her husband Stephen, Vickie Gilbert and her husband David; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Georgia E. Kennady of Hemet, Calif., and Elizabeth L. Miller and her husband Ben of York. He was preceded in death by his brother, Granville H. Gass. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, with his pastor, Rev. Bonnie J. Whittier officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover with full military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Serving as casketbearers will be Raymond's grandsons, Bradley S. Brewer, Dustin A. Brewer, Jared R. Gass, Jason L. Geiman, Jeffrey A. Geiman, Douglas M. Newman, Mark A. Shoemaker, Jeffrey R. Yingling and R. Richard Yingling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Raymond's memory to VNA Hospice of Hanover and Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison St., Hanover, PA 17331; or to the Wounded Warrior Project P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS, 66675.
