NORTH FORT MYERS, FL Darla D. (Lemmon) Whisler, 77, of North Fort Myers, FL and Hanover, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at Cape Coral Hospital, Cape Coral, Fla. She was the wife of Philip M. Whisler for 56 years. Born August 6, 1936, in Hanover, she was the daughter of the late Dolores A. and J. Donald Lemmon. Mrs. Whisler was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hanover. Darla graduated from Littlestown High School in 1954. Following graduation, she attended nursing school at Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, Md., graduating in 1957 as a registered nurse. Throughout her 50-plus years as a nurse, Darla worked in various care settings including Dr. Anthony Tananis' family practice in McSherrystown, the Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Department at Hanover General Hospital, the Intensive Care Unit at Cape Coral Hospital in Cape Coral, Fla., and various skilled nursing and assisted living facilities as she approached retirement. Darla loved to knit and made many beautiful blankets and sweaters over the years and also enjoyed doing needlepoint and cross stitch. She also loved going to Florida for the winter, which she did for the past 27 years, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her husband Phil, Darla is survived by three children, Bradley P. Whisler and his wife Beverly of Fort Myers, Fla., David A. Whisler and his wife Sharon of Spring Grove, and Melissa A. Dehoff and her husband James L., Jr. of Mechanicsburg; five grandchildren, Bobbi Sue Baker and her husband Scott of Milton, Ga., Becky Brock of Atlanta, Ga., Maxwell Whisler of Spring Grove, and Jena Dehoff and Hayden Dehoff of Mechanicsburg; and two great-grandchildren, Laila Baker and Wyatt Baker of Milton, Ga. A service to celebrate the life of Darla Whisler will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, with Pastor Gregory A. Rapp officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover. Serving as pallbearers will be Maxwell Whisler, Rick Shultz, James Dehoff, James Dehoff, Jr., Carl Nace and Earl Bowman.
