HANOVER Fred A. Pelaia, 88, entered into God's eternal care, Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill. Born February 22, 1926, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of the late Louis and Ida (Guarino) Pelaia. Fred was the loving husband of Mary C. (Murphy) Pelaia, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. He was a 1951 graduate of Seton Hall University in New Jersey. Mr. Pelaia was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country proudly in World War II in the Pacific Theater on an LCI-992 Ship. Fred was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover. Mr. Pelaia was employed for many years at Worthington Pump Company in Maryland as a controller. Fred was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Hanover. In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by his sons, Thomas Pelaia and his wife Maria of Livingston, N.J., Donald Pelaia of Hanover, Paul Pelaia and his wife Deborah of Spring Grove, Mark Pelaia of Hanover; his daughters, Marian Meola and her husband Anthony of Newport Coast, Calif., Cathy Smith and her husband Steven of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Matthew Meola and his wife Erin, Gregory Meola, Lindsay Meola, Lauren Pelaia, Alex Pelaia; one great-granddaughter, Abby Meola; his sister, Rose D'Alessio of Tom's River, N.J.; and his brother, Carmen Pelaia of Randolph, N.J. He was preceded in death by his brother, Salvatore Pelaia. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate and remember Fred's life will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, Pa., with Father Stephen Kelley as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, Hanover, with the Allied Veterans Honor Guard providing Military Honors. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, with a Prayer Service at 8 p.m. Serving as casketbearers will be Thomas Pelaia, Donald Pelaia, Paul Pelaia, Mark Pelaia, Anthony Meola and Steven Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Fred may be made to the of Greater Pennsylvania, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
