YORK Harvey A. Messinger "Gus", 91, passed away on June 28, 2014, at The Lutheran Home at Sprenkle Drive in York. He was the loving husband of Phyllis M. (Stambaugh) Messinger; together they shared over 68 years of marriage. Harvey was born in Spring Grove on September 4, 1922, and was the son of the late Paul and Bessie (Gladfelter) Messinger. He graduated from Spring Grove High School Class of 1942. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged. He worked for P.H. Glatfelter in Spring Grove in the Quality Control Department for over 40 years and retired in 1985. He was a longtime member of Mt. Zion United Church of Christ in Spring Grove, a charter member of the Spring Grove VFW Post #5682, a member of the Quarter Century Club at P.H. Glatfelter and Spring Grove Fire and Hose Company. In addition to his wife Phyllis, he is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Paul and Richard Messinger. A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, 12 N. Main St., Spring Grove, with the Rev. Larry Smith officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service at St. Peter's Lischeys Cemetery in Spring Grove, with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church. Family services are under the direction of Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., of Spring Grove. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Mt. Zion U.C.C., 12 N. Main St., Spring Grove, PA 17362; or Lutheran Home Care and Hospice Inc., 1651 Mt. Zion Road, York, PA 17406.
