HANOVER Walter A. Mummert, 84, entered into God's eternal care on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the Hanover Hospital. Born May 13, 1926, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Ira M. and Esther May (Gotwalt) Mummert. Walter was the loving husband of Janet L. (Kroft) Mummert to whom he was married for 62 years. Walter was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, York Street, Hanover. Walter attended Eichelberger High School in Hanover until his service began in the United States Navy. He served during World War II and was stationed on the U.S.S. Arizona with the Flagship of the Seventh Fleet. During this time he received numerous medals and commendations. Walter retired from BAE of York, formerly BMY, after 12 years of service. Prior to this, he was employed by his cousin, J. B. King as a home construction worker for 35 years. Walter reached the status of Master Carpenter. In his spare time, Walter became a registered wine maker. His hobby and knowledge of wine spanned a period of 40 years. In addition to his wife, Walter is survived by one son, Steven R. Mummert of Lancaster; one daughter, Wendy S. Shirey of McSherrystown; one grandson, Adam D. Miller of Philadelphia; one brother, Burnell Mummert of Hanover; and a sister, Doris B. Reichart of Hanover. He was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Mae Thomas. A funeral service to celebrate and remember Walter's life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, with Rev. Larry McConnell officiating and Rev. Kenneth Martz assisting. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover.
