HANOVER Vernon A. Hertz, 90, entered into God's eternal care Thursday, November 29, 2012. He was previously a resident of Columbia Cottage in Hanover. He was the husband of Kathleen E. (Sullivan) Hertz, who died September 14, 1983. Born February 1, 1922, in Spring Grove, he was the son of the late Earl M. and Martha G. (Riley) Hertz. Vernon was retired from the Hanover Fire Department. He was a 1940 graduate of Central Catholic High School, McSherrystown, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Hanover, a life member of the McSherrystown Home Association and McSherrystown Fish & Game Assoc., and belonged to numerous veteran organizations in the area. Vernon served proudly with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, receiving the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, American Defense Service Medal with one bronze star and the American Theater Service Medal. He was a former Cub Scout leader, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are five children, Patrick Hertz of McSherrystown, Kathleen McMaster and her husband, Merle of Hanover, James Hertz and his wife, Barbara of Fallon, Nev., Mary Brown and her husband, Richard of Hanover, and Mark Hertz and his wife, Vickie of Hanover; four siblings, Wayne Hertz and Dolores Kuhn, both of Hanover, Jack Hertz of Gettysburg, and Maryann Lake of McSherrystown; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Martin Hertz and David Hertz; and a brother, Earl Hertz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 220 Third St., Hanover, with the Rev. John D. Schmalhofer officiating. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, McSherrystown. Friends and relatives will be received Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with prayers at 4 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Michael McMaster, Douglas McMaster, Travus Brown, Steven Hertz, Andrew Hertz, Adam Hertz, and David Hertz.
