EDGEGROVE Gerald J. "Jim" Smith, 94, passed away peacefully Friday, March 1, 2013, at Hanover Hall Nursing Center. He was the husband of Mary M. "Mert" (Smith) Staub Smith and Florine E. (Livelsberger) Smith, who died April 10, 1972. Born April 17, 1918, in Centennial, he was the son of the late Maurice J. and Pauline M. (Eckenrode) Smith. Jim, also known as Painter Jim, was retired from Conewago Enterprises in Hanover. Jim served in the U.S. Navy from August 1943 aboard the U.S.S. George F. Elliott. For service to his country during WWII, Jim received the Pacific Theater of Operations Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with five stars, Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars. In November 1945 he made it home to his family in Edgegrove He was a member of Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, a life member of the Home Assoc. and Knights of Columbus in McSherrystown, New Oxford Social Club, Bonneauville CWV, SAVES, Irishtown Fire Co., and Adams County Volunteer Firemen's Assoc. Jim enjoyed working with his hands doing woodworking and fixing anything that was not working. He was noted for his gardening and caning chairs. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four children, Benedict Smith and his wife, Diane of Houston, Texas, Wayne Smith and his wife, Louise of Catonsville, Md., and Karen Porter and Annette Zinn and her husband, Abe, all of Hanover; eight stepchildren, Patricia Bittinger, Jerome Staub, John Staub, and Kathleen Staub, all of Hanover, Carroll Staub, Jr. of Lancaster, Marie Hermansen of York Springs, Rita Staub of McSherrystown, and Allen Staub of Abbottstown; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 17 stepgrandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one brother, Francis Smith of McSherrystown; and three sisters, Sr. Therese Marie Smith, ASC and Sr. Margaret Mary Smith ASC, both of Columbia, and Margaret Zimmerman of Hanover. He was preceded in death by seven siblings, Alfred E., Joseph P., Donald B., Maurice J., Robert J., Loretta L., and Christine Smith. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, with the Rev. Lawrence J. McNeil officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends and relatives will be received Monday 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with prayers at 8 p.m. Contributions in remembrance of Jim may be made to Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover, PA 17331; or of Adams County, P.O.
