NEW OXFORD Richard C. Smith, Sr., 80, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at his home. He was the loving husband of Nancy L. (Buffington) Smith, New Oxford to whom he was married to for 62 years. He was born February 21, 1933, in McSherrystown, the son of the late Richard Nevin and Margaret Anna (Kramer) Smith. Dick was employed as a mechanic with R.H. Crawford, Hanover for over 40 years and was known as the "Diesel Doctor Dick Smith". He was the mayor of Dicks Dam and in his younger years was a police officer in McSherrystown. Dick enjoyed working on tractors, fishing, boating, hunting, snowmobiling and most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Sandy Bankert and her husband William, Hanover, children, Dave Smith and his wife Joyce, New Oxford, Cindy Hufnagel and her husband Michael, Hanover and Richard C. Smith, Jr. and his wife Stephanie, New Oxford, granddaughters, Michele Reiker and her husband Bryan, Hanover, Brandy Ringrose and her husband Michael, Hanover, Ashley Hufnagel, Hanover and Emily Spahr, New Oxford and great grandchildren, Noah, Emma, Owen, Aubrey and Joseph. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jim and Wayne "Smoke" Smith. The family will receive friends and share memories on Thursday, May 23, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover.
