HANOVER James P. Owens, 71, died suddenly Thursday, September 19, 2013, at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. He is survived by Elizabeth Ann (Henneman) Owens, his wife of 48 years. James was born September 27, 1941, in Rahway, N.J., the son of the late James and Mary Catherine Owens. He was a 1959 graduate of Brooklyn Park High School, and attended the University of Baltimore. As a young man, James was a volunteer firefighter in Linthicum, Md., and served in the National Guard Special Forces as a demolition sergeant from 1964-70. He retired in 1999 after 38 years of service as a Procurement Specialist and Project Manager at Social Security Administration. During that time, he raised Black Angus cattle on his family farm in Brodbecks. He was Chief of Police in Manheim Township, York County, from 1978-88. He later worked as Food Bank Coordinator at Carroll County Food Sunday from 2000-03. In addition to his wife, James is survived by a son, James P., Jr.; two daughters, Kerry and her husband, Vic Madrid of Catonsville, Md., and Katie and her husband, Matt Eischen of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Julia, and Max Madrid, and Molly Eischen; and a large extended family. Viewings will be held on Monday, September 23, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hubbard Funeral Home, 4107 Wilkens Ave., Catonsville, MD 21229. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 5976 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, MD 21075.
