HANOVER Merle C. "Pap" Little, 92, formerly of Littlestown, entered into God's eternal care Friday, January 3, 2014, at the Lutheran Retirement Village at Utz Terrace. He was the husband of Mildred G. (Bolin) Little, who died August 31, 2007. Born August 30, 1921, in Adams County, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Leila (Sentz) Little. Merle was retired from Littlestown Hardware & Foundry with over 40 years of service, and worked part time at Weis Market in Hanover following retirement. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church, McSherrystown, and a former member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Littlestown. He was a life member of Littlestown VFW, Littlestown American Legion, Bonneauville CWV, Littlestown Eagles, and Alpha Fire Co. Merle proudly served in the Army during WWII with the Big Red 1 infantry. Merle was a prisoner of War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He often mentioned the Bible which he kept in his shirt pocket that stopped a bullet and saved his life. Surviving are one son, Merle W. "Skip" Little and his wife, Shirley of Hanover; a daughter-in-law, Carol Little of Clearwater, Fla.; four grandchildren, Tim Little and wife, Brenda, Tammy Gobrecht, Steven Bucher and wife, Pam, and Ashley Little; and three great-grandchildren, Mitchell Gobrecht, and Hannah and Abigail Bucher. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary L. Little; and four brothers, Paul, Donald, Lester, and Edward Little. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2014, at Annunciation Catholic Church, McSherrystown, with the Rev. Lawrence W. Sherdel officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by Littlestown VFW Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with prayers at 4 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Merle W. Little, Tammy Gobrecht, Mitch Gobrecht, Steven Bucher, and Brenda Little. The family would like to give a special "Thank You" to the Lutheran Retirement Village and Hospice & Community Care.
