HANOVER Robert E. Smith, 80, passed away, Monday, January 13, 2014, at the York Hospital. He was the husband of Lorraine D. "Sis" (Sanders) Smith, who died August 18, 2004. Born February 7, 1933, in Hanover, he was the son of Eugene W. Smith Sr. and Francine (Oaster) Smith. Bob was retired from the HART Center in New Oxford. He was a 1952 graduate of Delone Catholic High School and a member of Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, where he was a Eucharistic Minister for over 30 years. Bob was a charter member of both the former Conewago Fire Co. where he was Chief for 18 years and the former Brushtown Fire Company. He was a member of the CWV in Bonneauville, SAVES, Irishtown Fire Co., PA State Fireman's Assoc., Cumberland Valley Fireman's Assoc., Adams County Fire Chiefs Assoc. where he was past president, and Adams County Volunteer Fireman's Assoc. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Surviving is his step-daughter, Diane Weightman of Hanover; five siblings, Alice Smith of New Oxford, Janet Moul, Joan Minsinger, Eugene W. Smith Jr., and Earl A. "Tony" Smith all of Hanover. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Richard J. Smith and Doris Ravenscroft. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2014, at Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, with Rev. James E. Lease officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends and relatives will be received Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with prayers at 8 p.m. Contributions in remembrance of Bob may be made to Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Dr., Hanover, PA 17331 or to the HART Center, 450 E.
