George Y. Onoda Jr.(1938 - 2014)

ALMOND - George Y. Onoda Jr. passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 1, 2014, at the age of 75.

He had resided in Almond since 1993. George was born on Oct. 5, 1938, in Suisun, California. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carole; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Cliff Lentz; a son, Steven; a daughter Amy Hendrickson; grandchildren, Katelyn and Claire Lentz, and Riley, Skylar and Conner Odom; a sister Eleanor; and a brother-in-law, Monty Newborn.

George received his M.S. in metallurgy from University of California Berkeley and his Ph.D. in ceramics engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He taught at the University of Florida Gainvesville and was a scientist at IBM Yorktown Heights before teaching at Alfred University.

George will be remembered for his ballroom dancing and love of music. He enjoyed reading scientific books and mysteries. He played a good game of Scrabble. He will be greatly missed by his family, relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday (Jan. 11, 2014) at 2 p.m. at the Howell Hall on the Alfred University Campus, with Rev. Patricia Bancroft officiating.

A memorial service will also be held in Sacramento, Calif., in February.
