Michael D. Shafer Obituary
PERKINSVILLE/LAMIRADA, Calif. - Michael D. Shafer passed away Friday evening (April 4, 2014) at St. Jude's Hospital in Fullerton, Calif.

Michael was born Jan. 17, 1969, in Dansville, the son of Donald and Norma (Gross) Shafer. He grew up in Perkinsville and was a 1987 graduate of Wayland Central School.

He attended Monroe Community College for a period of time and in 1989 he joined the United States Navy. Michael served his country from 1989 until his honorable discharge in 1993.

During his tenure, he was an operations specialist and was deployed to the Persian Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm. Upon his discharge, Michael returned to his base in California and has remained a California resident ever since.

He began his employment career with the Long Beach/ Los Angeles Harbor Marine Exchange as a vessel traffic controller and has been with them for more than 20 years. Most recently he was a supervisor for them. Michael was a hard worker and his employer never had to worry when he was directing ships in and out of the harbor.

Michael's hobbies were many, as he enjoyed fishing, golfing, woodworking and searching for items with his metal detector. He was an avid collector of baseball cards and other sports memorabilia along with coins.

Michael was a Buffalo Bills and a New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed going to Yankees games with his son, Matthew, when they played in Anaheim.

One of his fondest memories of high school was winning the Section V baseball championship in 1986. One of his favorite pastimes was military research concerning the history and ancestry pertaining to members of his family that served in the military. He had pictures of all his family that had served in the military throughout the years.

Michael is survived by his son Matthew Shafer of California; his parents, Donald and Norma Shafer of Perkinsville; his sisters, Terry (Roger) Johnson of Dansville, Vicky (Harmon) Spencer of Wayland, and Lynda Scialdone of Rochester; his nephews, Jaime Johnson, Benjamin and Jonathan Spencer and Alex and Zachary Scialdone; his great-niece Madison Spencer; and his dog, Brandy.
