Hruska, Michael A.
Michael A. Hruska, age 21, lost his two year battle with cancer on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Aspirus Hospital, Wausau, Wisconsin.
Michael was born July 7, 1993 in Wausau to Ronald and Colleen (Boerner) Hruska.
Michael was a 2012 graduate of D. C. Everest High School. He was a freshman at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota when he was diagnosed with an osteosarcoma tumor in his right leg. Michael was treated for his cancer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His right leg was amputated above the knee in March 2013 when chemotheraphy failed to shrink the tumor. Michael was proud to be an amputee and insisted he was not handicapped. Michael continued chemotheraphy and radiation treatments for his cancer through October 2014. While undergoing cancer treatment in the fall of 2014 Michael attended the University of Wisconsin - Marathon County. Michael planned for a career in criminal justice but after his amputation changed his major to psychology with a desire to make a difference in people's lives as a counselor.
Michael played varsity soccer in high school and enjoyed many sports including, baseball, softball, basketball, and golf. Michael also enjoyed running, lifting weights, camping and fishing. Michael was employed at Quality Foods IGA and Greenwood Hills Country Club during the spring and summer of 2014. He really enjoyed these jobs and his co-workers.
Michael is survived by his parents, Ronald and Colleen Hruska, Rothschild, brothers Matthew, Shoreview, MN, Mark and Mitchell, Rothschild, maternal grandparents Willard and Geraldine Boerner, Minnetonka, MN, aunts Patricia Boerner, Minnetonka, MN, Kathleen (Mike) Perkins, St. Louis Park, MN, Roberta (Mark) Mellberg, Green Bay, Renata Hruska, Green Bay, uncles Robert (Jean) Hruska, Libertyville, IL, Richard (Joyce) Hruska, Green Bay, Thomas (Karen) Boerner, Corcoran, MN, and many cousins.
Michael was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Edward and Juanita Hruska, Green Bay, uncle Joseph Boerner and aunt Jean Boerner, both of West St.Paul, MN.
Michael was a very intelligent and caring young man with a great future. He had great determination and courage and always kept a positive attitude through his cancer treatments. He was always more concerned about his cancer's impact on others than on himself. He had a good sense of humor and many friends that supported him through his battle with cancer.

I just spotted the note in the Wausau paper about Mike's passing. Oh so sad. I had him as a sophomore in a business computer class. Such a dear young man he was...so dedicated to his sports and his work. Did not know he had been so sick. Such fond memories of the dear young man he was!! So sad to lose your son, a special young man, fondly remembered. So sorry for your loss!!

I've always admired your strength and determination to finish anything you set your mind to. I remember you telling me you were in the ER due to some illness and then proceeded to tell me how disappointed you were that you had to miss a couple classes, like someone had told you that you weren't allowed to go, rather than not being able to. You were a great friend and I'm gonna miss you bud.
