Dr. Donald Oliver Hitzman, 85, resident of Bartlesville, died Friday, November 23, 2012 at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 3 P.M. on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory. Charitable contributions may be made to the
Dr. Donald Oliver Hitzman was born December 2, 1926 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Walter John and Irene (Smith) Hitzman. Dr. Hitzman was raised and received his education in Rochester, Minnesota graduating high school there in 1943. Dr. Hitzman also graduated from the University of Nebraska the same year under a special program during WWII. He entered the U.S Army
Air Corp on August 30, 1943 and was honorably discharged on November 2, 1945. Dr. Hitzman attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota graduating in 1948. Dr. Hitzman was married to Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Neumann on August 20, 1949 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dr. Hitzman attended the University of Southern California and then was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and attended the University of Sydney, Australia for two years. Dr. Hitzman then attended the University of Illinois
where he received his Ph.D. in 1955. Dr. and Mrs. Hitzman moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1955 and he began his career with Phillips Petroleum Company and retired from Phillips in the early 1980's. After his retirement with Phillips Dr. Hitzman with his son Daniel founded Geo- Microbial Technologies, Ochelata, Oklahoma, where he was Director of Research. Dr. Hitzman was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and a member of many professional societies.
Survivors include his wife Betty Hitzman of the family home in Bartlesville; two sons Murray W. Hitzman of Golden, Colorado and Daniel C. Hitzman of Tulsa, and one grandson Jeffrey Daniel Hitzman also of Tulsa. Dr. Hitzman was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Warren W. Hitzman.
