Fred Friend, age 67, of Lewisville, TX passed away at home on March 20, 2013 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born October 4, 1945 in Vinita, OK to Bill and Rowena Friend. He was raised in Bowring on the Friend Ranch. He married Mary Malaske on June 22, 1968 in Perry, OK. Fred graduated from Bowring High School in 1963, Oklahoma Military Academy Junior College in 1965, and Oklahoma State University in 1968. He later obtained his Master's Degree from The George Washington University in Washington D.C. in 1975. He proudly served in the United States Army Special Forces from August 1968 to July 1973, achieving the rank of Captain. He served in Vietnam in 1969-70. He then served a year in the Oklahoma National Guard. Fred worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 16 years, several years in Houston for TDS, and then retired from JP Morgan Chase two years ago.
Fred was an avid soccer enthusiast, playing, coaching youth, and refereeing the sport for years. He enjoyed road trips, historical landmarks, and camping, especially with his grandchildren. He was an avid reader, history buff, and was always ready to experience a new cultural festival. He was widely admired for his professional coaching and mentoring, extending both to coworkers and friends alike. His family will remember him as a devoted husband, loving father, and fun loving Grandad. His sense of humor, positive attitude, and unfaltering courage built an enduring legacy for his family.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Mary Friend; daughters, Rebecca Tarter and husband Stephen, Jennifer Noffz and husband Mike, and Christina Crowder and husband Scott, all of Flower Mound, TX; brothers, Billy Mike Friend and wife Tyalena and Dee Friend and wife Linda; sister, Debbie Glazner and husband Ralph; ten grandchildren, Henry, Mackenzie, Georgia Kate, Cameron, Chloe, Parker, Preston, Spencer, Jack and Lucas; aunt, Jeanie Weeks; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 P.M., Monday, March 25, 2013 at McCartney's Johnson Funeral Home in Pawhuska, OK. Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M., Tuesday March 26, 2013 at Pawhuska City Cemetery.
