IRVIN DUNLAP, JR.
Irvin Caldwell Dunlap Jr. departed peacefully on June 26, 2013. Irvin was born May 28,1934, in Denver, Colorado to Irvin C. Dunlap and Marie Simmons Dunlap. He grew up in Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and graduated from Lufkin Senior High School Lufkin, TX in 1952.
While studying English at the University of the South at Sewanee, Irvin joined ROTC. After earning his Bachelor of Arts he served in the United States Air Force
from 1956 to 1960 as the Administrative Officer at Rothwestern Air Base in Germany. He later earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Texas
In 1960 he moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma where he taught English in the Bartlesville City Schools from August, 1961, to December, 1987 at College High School, Sooner High School, and Bartlesville Middle High School. During his tenure as a teacher he was active in the Bartlesville Education Association (president for two terms), Oklahoma Education Association, National Education Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English.
Irvin was active in local theatrical organizations including the Bartlesville Theater Guild (now Theatre Bartlesville), Ballet Bartlesville, Harlequins, Center Stage, Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra, and Bartlesville Community Concerts. For over twenty years he performed the role of Dr. Drosselmeyer in the Ballet Bartlesville productions of Nutcracker. Over many years he served Theatre Bartlesville as in many technical functions, as well as being an actor, director and on the Board of Directors.
On June 10, 1967 Irvin married Dortha Jeffus, formerly of Arkansas, then residing in Chicago, Illinois. They have one daughter, Catherine Rachel Dunlap, born October 16, 1969, Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
In 1987 Irvin Retired from teaching. In May, 1991 he received an award from Allied Arts and Humanities recognizing long and dedicated service and support of the arts. He was awarded a life membership in Bartlesville Theater Guild the next year and continued many activities in the art communities in Bartlesville. From 2000-2011 Irvin Served on the Board of Directors of Bartlesville Community Concert Association as Concert Chairman and was also on the Board of Directors of the Bartlesville Senior Actors Guild.
He is survived by Wife Dortha Dunlap of the home and Daughter Catherine Dunlap Popalisky and son-in-law Matthew Popalisky of Fayetteville, AR.
Services were held Saturday, June 29th, 2013 1:00 PM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. A memorial fund is established at Theatre Bartlesville and Bartlesville School System English, Speech, and Drama Departments.
