Millie Petrie went to be with Jesus Sunday December 23rd, 2012. A memorial service to celebrate Millie's life will be held Saturday December 29th at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory. Millie was born Millicent Johnson on June 9th 1940 to Robert and Kathleen in Monticello, Arkansas. Millie grew up in Crossett, Arkansas with her four siblings Wayne, Caroline, Buddy, and Sara. She had many fond memories with them. She graduated in 1958 from Crossett High School where she played the flute in the Eagle's marching band. Millie went on to play the flute at Arkansas A&M at Monticello where she met her future husband Bobby Petrie. Millie then attended Arkansas State Teacher's College where she graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Millie taught Home Economics in Bradford, Arkansas and then in Tucson, Arizona before marrying Bobby June 23rd 1963. Bobby and Millie moved frequently from 1963 until 1975 as Bobby worked for Kmart in Texas, California, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Oklahoma. Bobby and Millie made many lifelong friends as they moved about the U.S.
Millie's skills as a homemaker and teacher served her family well as she sewed many of their clothes and always had home cooked meals ready for her family and friends. In 1979 Bobby resigned from Kmart, and Millie felt led to join the kitchen staff working at First Baptist Church. Millie served as the Church Hostess from 1998 until her retirement in 2005. She immensely enjoyed her time working with the ladies in the kitchen, and she loved the challenges of planning and preparing meals, banquets, receptions, and weddings. She spent many summers cooking for the youth and staff at Falls Creek. She loved spending time with the youth, and she truly felt God had led her to serve the people of First Baptist Church. Her ability to cook and her loving spirit were her gifts from God, and she blessed many people with her love and talent, but she always said that she was the one who received the true blessing.
After retiring from FBC, Millie and Bobby traveled the United States and Europe. They had a wonderful time on an Alaskan cruise with many of their friends, toured Europe with her siblings, and this last spring rode a train into New Orleans where she enjoyed a visit with family. They also made regular trips to visit their grandchildren in Oklahoma and granddaughter in California. Millie was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren and never wanted to miss any important events in their lives. She was able to attend her oldest grandchild's graduation in May of this year, and it was a very special time for both of them.
Millie is survived by her husband Bobby, two sisters: Caroline Adams and Bruce of Antioch, Illinois; Sara Richardson of Searcy, Arkansas; one brother: James (Buddy) Johnson and Jeannie of Memphis, Tennessee; three children: George Petrie of Lemoore, California; Gary Petrie and Michelle of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Martha Millard and Jason of Enid, Oklahoma; and five grandchildren: Faith, Rachel and Lane Millard of Enid, Gavin Petrie of Bartlesville, and Skylar Petrie of Lemoore, CA. Millie was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Kathleen Johnson and her brother Wayne.
