Ruthalene Peters, 89, longtime owner of Peters Hardware and Dry Goods in Dewey, died Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
Mrs. Peters was born December 3, 1923, in Delaware, OK, the daughter of Bert and Gayle Reich. She graduated from Dewey High School in 1941. Ruthalene was united in marriage with Clarence R. Peters on May 21, 1941. She attended the University of Oklahoma and remained an avid OU sports fan ever since. Clarence and Ruthalene were owners and partners with Melvin and Katie Peters in the Peters Corporation, which operated several retail businesses in Oklahoma including Peters Hardware and Peters Dry Goods in Dewey and Bartlesville. Peters Hardware has been a downtown Dewey landmark since 1917. Clarence preceded her to heaven in 1980 and Ruthalene later moved to Edmond, OK, in 2009, to be closer to her daughter.
Mrs. Peters was an energetic lady who wore many hats during her time on earth: wife, mother, Meemie, businesswoman, civic volunteer, church member, traveler, and lover of Sooner sports and white sandy beaches, among them. She stayed active in the community through several local organizations including the Dewey PTA, Dewey United Methodist Church, Gray Ladies, Elks Club
, and by serving as President of the Pilot Club of Dewey. Clarence and Ruthalene were lifelong OU football fans; they attended every home and away game for many years, and never missed a bowl game. They travelled to all 50 states and loved to spend time in balmy Destin, Florida. Meemie, as she was known to her grandchildren, was a loving and wonderful grandmother who cherished taking them on memorable family vacations. She will be dearly missed.
Mrs. Peters is survived by her daughter Nancy Smith and husband Chuck; son-in-law Larry Quigley; four grandchildren, Ryan Smith and wife Martha, Chelsea Ouellette and husband Corey, Jennifer Quigley Fall, and Eric Quigley; and five great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law Katherine Peters. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence Peters, daughter Gayle Quigley, sister Imogene Raymond, and brothers-in-law Elam Raymond and Melvin Peters.
