Helen Marie May, 91, resident of rural Copan, died Saturday October 19, 2013 in Dewey.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday October 23, 2013 in the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Sherman Jaquess of the Matoaka Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Dewey Cemetery under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
Helen Marie May was born on May 6, 1922 in Nowata County the daughter of William C. and Rena (VanBuskirk) Gibson. She was raised in Nowata County and married Edward Sherman May on November 24, 1938 at Bartlesville. He preceded her in death on February 25, 2005. She had been a homemaker. She liked to sew and made beautiful quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. Mr. May was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association and they traveled all over the Midwest following the rodeo circuit. In 1974, she helped organize the Copan Roping and Riding Club and was a lifetime member.
Helen is survived by one son William "Bill" May and his wife Bonnie of Copan, one daughter, Mary Long and her husband Jack of Ochelata four grandchildren, Curtis Eric Gibson and Ieasha of Springfield, Massachusetts, Jason Kyle Long and Casey of Ochelata, Chanda Lynn Swalley and Jasen of Bartlesville and Justin Allen Long and Missy of Ochelata, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Ed Gibson, three brothers and four sisters.
