Mr. John Maurice Flanigan, 72, of Dewey, died at 5:29 P.M. on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the Hillcrest South Hospital in Tulsa.
Memorial services for Mr. Flanigan were held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel with Lanny Smith, minister of the Town and Country Christian Church officiating.
A memorial fund has been established and those who wish may send their contributions to the Washington County SPCA, 16620 State Highway 123, Bartlesville, Oklahoma 74006.
Mr. Flanigan was born in Ochelata, Oklahoma on December 4, 1945 the son of John Hendricks Flanigan and Ruby Irene (Buttman) Flanigan. He spent most of his time in Bartlesville and Dewey and learned carpentry and building skills from his dad at an early age. In his younger years he loved to ride motorcycles. He married the love of his life, Joyce Elaine Flatt on August 7, 1965 in Bartlesville. John was active as a machinist and they moved to Dallas in 1969, and briefly to Denver until returning to Bartlesville in 1970. Due to health reasons he became active in sales of automobiles, insurance, real estate and auto parts. If someone wanted it, he would sell it. After 20 years a health change created another career change and he bought land north of Dewey and opened a utility trailer business. He sold the business in 2002 and was planning on manufacturing a trailer lock he had invented but due to health reasons it was put on hold again. In 2003 he suffered a stroke after triple bypass surgery and he fought back and built a home in which he resided with Joyce until his death. Major frustration in his final years was that he could no longer work with his hands. He was a member of the Town and Country Christian Church and a member of the Bartlesville Masonic Lodge where he was a 32nd degree Mason.
Mr. Flanigan is survived by his wife, Joyce of the home, two children, Michael Flanigan of Bartlesville and Cindy Flanigan of Duncan, Okla., one brother, Bill Picaman of Princeton, Missouri, three sisters, Betty Sue Franklin of Tulsa, Saralou Williams of Disney, Okla., and Kay Allan of Tulsa, five grandchildren, Domonique Downing and wife Jeanette of Nowata, Ashley Pickett and husband Joe of Hominy, Okla., Shelby Wilmes and husband Ryan of Houston, Texas, Aubrey Mouser of Kerrville, Texas and Jarrett Reynolds of Duncan, Okla., eight great grandchildren, Davionn Downing, Thadious Downing, Makinze Flanigan, Jaxson Pickett, Drew Graham, Jenna Graham and Spencer Pickett. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Julia Blankenship and Phyllis Stewart.
