Mr. John Rolla Mayhew, 81, of Bartlesville, died at 5:43 P.M. Saturday, August 25, 2012 at his home.
Funeral services for Mr. Mayhew will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the Adams Blvd. Church of Christ with Mr. David Hammonds officiating and assisted by Mr. Art Henley. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Mayhew's name and those who wish may send their contributions to the Hope Harbor Children's Home, P.O. Box 1047, Claremore, Oklahoma, 74018.
Mr. Mayhew was born at Salina, Kansas on July 26, 1931 the son on Dewey Allen and Ruth M. (Boatman) Mayhew. He grew up in various locations in Kansas where his family made their homes during his father's employment as a Western Union telegraph operator. He graduated from high school at Topeka, Kansas and then attended Abilene Christian College at Abilene, Texas where he graduated in 1954 with a Bachelors degree in Marketing and English. He was married to Peggy Jean Goode at Dallas, Texas on March 23, 1954. Mr. Mayhew was employed with Phillips Petroleum Company in Houston, Texas in 1954 and they made their home in Houston until transferring to Bartlesville with Phillips in late 1970. Mrs. Mayhew preceded him in death on June 15, 1986 and Mr. Mayhew also retired from Phillips in 1986. He was married to Margaret Lafern Simmermacher on October 10, 1987 in Bartlesville and they have made their home there since that time. Mr. Mayhew was a member of the Adams Blvd. Church of Christ where he was active for a number of years in the church's community care program. He loved woodworking and had made various furniture pieces for all of his family members. In previous years he loved to hunt and fish and he enjoyed the outdoors. He also loved spending time with his family and friends.
Mr. Mayhew is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Mayhew, two sons, Kevin Richard Mayhew and his wife Kathy of Springdale, Arkansas and Stephen Anthony Mayhew and his wife, Janet of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, his daughter-in-law, Diana Cochran-Mayhew of Houston, Texas, seven grandchildren, Joel Mayhew, Dustin Mayhew, Anna-Kate Bogaards, Alyssa Mayhew, Sarah MacLeod, Blake Mayhew and Rachel Mayhew, and seven great grandchildren, Gavin Mayhew, Austin Mayhew, Jack Rolla Mayhew, Hudson Mayhew, Thomas Mayhew, Emmalijn Bogaards and Iris MacLeod. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty Everett, one son, David Allen Mayhew and his first wife, Peggy Jean Mayhew.
