Joyce Llewellyn Sherwin was born August 22, 1922 at Wichita Falls, Texas to George Van and Jewell (Murphy) McCarthy. She was raised and received her early education in Borger, Texas. Mrs. Sherwin attended under graduate school at Borger, Texas. She attended West State College at Canyon, Texas. She was employed at Phillips Petroleum Company in Borger as special tester in the laboratory. In 1943 she and another female were the first female employees at the Phillips refinery in Borger Texas. Mrs. Sherwin was married to Douglas J. Sherwin on August 22, 1946 in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin lived in Oxford, England where they pursued additional educational opportunities. During WWII Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin worked for the State Department in Germany. She attended the University of Maryland, where she received her Master's degree in Psychology. She taught public school, second grade in Washington, DC and worked as a certified counselor in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Mr. Sherwin was president of Phillips Products Company. While living in Lexington, Joyce refurbished an early day mansion. After moving to Bartlesville, Oklahoma she taught school at College High School. She was the principle involved in starting the League of Women Voters in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and was a member of the American Association of University Women.
Mrs. Sherwin is survived by her husband Douglas S. Sherwin of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
