Mary Elma Jarvis - Christian Teacher, Mother, Writer
Mrs Jarvis was born on November 16, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she was present at, and narrowly survived the Japanese attack on her neighborhood at Pearl Harbor. She then grew up mostly in California, where she graduated from Long Beach State University as a teacher, and then attended San Francisco Theological Seminary, where she married Michael Jarvis on June 25, 1961. Mary passed away quietly in her sleep August 19th, 2013, after living with cancer since Spring.
Mary started teaching 3rd Grade in 1960, and over the years taught every grade, finishing her career teaching Christian Education at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, OK in 2006. She continued to develop Sunday School curriculum and had a published children's mission curriculum for the Anglican Church. She was an editor for the Christian Library Journal, and had numerous articles published in various Christian magazines and journals. At the end of her life she had finished writing a Christian romance novel that she was preparing for posthumous publication.
She was an avid gardener, and loved reading, quilting, and being a grandmother. Her life motto was "Aren't we having fun?!" And, shortly before passing away, she said, "My children are my crowning achievement".
Mrs Jarvis was 75 years old at the time of death. Mrs Jarvis lived on the family allotment ranch outside of Pawhuska her last 16 years, where she brought forth beauty from the earth again. Her death occurred at home, and the warm caring help of Comforting Hands Hospice is deeply appreciated by Mrs Jarvis and the family.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Father Michael Jarvis of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, whom she fell in love with on Mount Tamalpais, California, and walked hand in hand over many roads; her sister, Donna Grain of Honolulu, Hawai'i; her brother, Ted Little of Kernville, California. Surviving children are: MSGT John Jarvis, USAF (ret) of Wichita Falls, Texas; David and Barbara Jarvis, MD of Baraboo, Wisconsin; Adjunct Professor Matthew Jarvis of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; Kathy (Jarvis) and CSC John Williams, USN (ret) of Bremerton, Washington. Her nieces are Merrie Carol of Honolulu, HA and Robin Grain of Oklahoma City. Surviving grandchildren are: Kirstie Williams of Seattle, WA; Keith Williams of Bremerton, WA; William Warren Jarvis and Bethany Rose Jarvis of Baraboo, WI; and her dear friend Myong Hubbard of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, whom Mary loved as a daughter.
Mary did not want a funeral of sorrow. She wished to have her life and love of God and family, friends, and God's blessings celebrated. Therefore a Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Bartlesville on Thursday August 22nd at 2:00 pm.
