Mr. R. Kay Smith, 101, longtime resident of Bartlesville, died at 7:55 PM on Friday September 20, 2013 in Bartlesville.
Graveside Services for Mr. Smith will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, with Mr. Lee Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory. Mr. Smith was born on June 19, 1912 at Bellefountain, Ohio to William Lamar and Ethel (Gebby) Smith. He was raised and received his early education there graduating from High School there in 1930. He began his working career in Borger, Texas for Phillips Petroleum Company, until moving to Bartlesville in 1943, working here in the personnel department, retiring as personnel manager in 1974. He was married to Mary Helen McVay on June 15, 1934 at Borger, Texas. They continued to make their home in Bartlesville after his retirement. He was a lifelong musician, starting out playing in a family orchestra at age 4, and was an excellent musician, playing almost any stringed instrument; also playing in a number of different groups and trios, playing Big Band Music. He had performed for a lot of different employee functions for Phillips employees, and had entertained at Woolaroc for Board of Directors, and executive events. He also had performed in a number of the nursing homes in this area until the past few years. Mr. Smith also served on a number of boards and commissions including the Board of Directors of 66 Federal Credit Union (now Truity) from 1945-1955, as Chairman of the Bartlesville Library Board, and had served as treasurer of his Sunday School Class for over 60 years, member of the First United Methodist Church, of which he had served as a Usher, and head usher for several years, also active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as District Troop Chairman, the Tuxedo Lions Club- Board of Directors from 1955-1969, and also the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Mr. Smith is survived by his son Lynn Smith and wife Melinda of Richmond, Texas, by a niece Patricia Zundell of Gresham, Oregon, and a nephew Mike Smith of Santa Monica California, by two grandchildren Jon King and David King both of Stafford, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife; Mary Helen Smith in 1999, and an infant daughter, and by a sister Lavonne Weymouth, and by three brothers; Vaughn, Emory, and Bill Smith.
The Smith family would like to express sincere thanks to the entire staff at Green Country Village. He was extremely happy living there and truly loved all those caring for him.
