Mr. Virgil Leroy Thurman Jr., 83, of Bartlesville, died at 6:25 P.M. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Thurman will be held at 1 P.M. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Bill Inglish of the United Disciples of Christ officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the Ceremonial Detail of the James H. Teel American Legion Post # 105. Funeral services and interment will be directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mr. Thurman was born at Pawhuska, Oklahoma on June 16, 1930 to Dorothy L. (Campbell) and Virgil Leroy Thurman Sr. He grew up and received his education in Pawhuska, Bartlesville and in Borger, Texas. Following his high school graduation in Borger he attended Frank Phillips Junior College there. He served with the United States Navy from September 8, 1950 serving aboard the U.S.S. Waller (DDE-466) until receiving his Honorable Discharge on June 30, 1954. He was married to Joyce Evelyn Woodard on April 30, 1955 at Raton, New Mexico. They made their home in Borger, Texas until moving to Bartlesville in December of 1959. Mr. Thurman was active as a builder with his brother in the operation of Thurman Brothers Construction Co. until his retirement. He was also part-owner with his wife of Mr. Limey's Fish & Chips in Comanche Center. He loved restoring old cars, photography, genealogy, computers and was a lifetime fisherman.
Mr. Thurman is survived by his wife, Joyce Thurman, two sons, Gary Wayne Thurman and wife Terry of Bartlesville and Darrel Lynn Thurman of Bartlesville; one brother, George Henry Thurman and wife Alayne of Bartlesville; two sisters, Ruth Ann Thurman and Rita Kathleen Barnes and her husband Larry all of Bartlesville, Kevin Ickleberry and wife Kerry of Bartlesville; three grandchildren, Shiloh Christopher Thurman and wife Sarah, Chelsey Turley and her husband Rance and Brad Woodard; six great grandchildren, Norah Rose Thurman, Jaden Turley, Lilliana Turley, Sahalie Turley, Cydnee Woodard and Chloee Woodard; a sister-in-law, Carolyn DeMaree of Alva, Okla.; a brother-in-law, Jim Strickland of Kansas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Cody Thurman in 2002.
