Dexter Eudell Smith, 89, of Bartlesville and Norman, Oklahoma, passed away this Monday, March 10th, 2014. He was born on January 26th, 1925 in DeWitt, Arkansas to Hubert Horatio and Ethel Coffman Smith.
He began his education at Sugarloaf School, graduated from Antlers High School, and after completion of military service, went on to achieve his bachelors in mathematics at Southeastern State University in Durant, Oklahoma, and his masters in mathematics at the University of Tulsa. During World War II, he served as military attache to the Caribbean Defense Command, Quarry Heights, Panama Canal Zone, receiving numerous commendations for his outstanding contributions to the security of that command.
On August 27th, 1948, in Paris, Texas, he married Lena Mae Honeywell, a fellow student at Southeastern State University. In 1951, the couple moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where Dexter worked in Research and Development for Phillips 66 as a systems analyst, accumulating over sixty patents to his credit. He retired from Phillips in 1987. He continued to work for Icotron and Honeywell as senior consulting engineer and at 61, he was named Rookie of the Year for his exceptional contribution to Honeywell in Houston, Texas. In 1995, he took a second retirement from these companies but continued as special consultant with them for another decade. Dexter was a faithful and beloved Christian husband and father, dynamic Sunday School teacher, and long-time member of Adams Church of Christ in Bartlesville.
He is survived by his wife, Lena Mae Smith; his sister, Ellen Sue Crumpton of Dallas, his brother, Vernon D. Smith of Sapulpa; daughters, Karen S. Mahaffey and her husband Gregory, Twyla J. Smith, M.D. and her husband Joel E. Holloway, M.D., a son, Kyle V. Smith; one grandson, David Mahaffey and his wife Gloria; two granddaughters, Rosemary and Lucy Mahaffey; and two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Adelaide Mahaffey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Ethel Smith and two brothers, Eanon and James Robert Smith.
Havenbrook Funeral Home is arranging funeral services at the Warren Cemetery in Norman.
