Ethel Smith Horton, age 98, passed away at her home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on Monday, May 12, 2014.

Ethel Williams was born on November 9, 1915 in Chandler, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Willie and Pauline (Barefield) Williams. Ethel was the oldest of 14 children.
She attended Carver Middle School in Tulsa, Oklahoma and was a graduate of Langston High School in Langston, Oklahoma. She married Luther B. Smith on November 20, 1934. Two children were born to this union: Verneta Faye and John Luther. The family lived in Guthrie, Oklahoma before relocating to Bartlesville in 1947. Mr. Smith preceded her in death in February of 1974. On March 27, 1977, Ethel and Rev. Wilmer C. Horton, Sr. were united in marriage in Bartlesville. Two sons and one daughter joined this union. Rev. Horton preceded her in death in October 2010. Ethel has continued to live in Bartlesville in retirement.
During WWII, Ethel was hired as a riveter with Douglas Aircraft Plant in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Later she was employed by Arnold Moore Funeral Services where she worked approximately 47 years before retiring in 1995.
Since 1947, Ethel has been a member of the Greater First Baptist Church in Bartlesville and a faithful attendee when her health allowed. She also served as the beloved First Lady of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Baxter Springs, Kansas from 1977 to 1995. She was an active participant in St. Paul District Association (OK) and Southeastern District Association (KS).
She was always active in various organizations, some of which are: Westside Senior Citizens Association; Oklahoma Home & Community Education (OHCE) (40+ years); National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (50+ years); Grand Court Order of Calanthe (held position of Worthy Matron); and the Church Women United, Bartlesville.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Willie & Pauline (Barefield) Williams; husbands, Luther B. Smith and Wilmer C. Horton, Sr.; children, Verneta Faye Moss, John Luther Smith and Mary Josephine (Moore) Mutch; grandchildren, Derrica Moss, Faye Hilson and Gesela Moss; and siblings, three brothers and seven sisters.
Survivors include children, Donald and Sandra Horton of Lancaster, Texas, W. C. and Gladys of Memphis, Tennessee, John and Diane Moore of Ochelata, Oklahoma, and Mary (Horton) Wallace; grandchildren, Derrick & Lois Moss, Marcia Renee' Jones, Darnell Moss, Wanda Atkins, Charlene Killebrew, Sandra Smith, Donna Horton, Joyce Horton, Tonya Leflore, Cheryl Taylor and Joyce Jones; sisters, Erma Davis of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Versa Flowers of Pomona, California; brother, Dwayne Williams and his wife, Marie, of Arlington, Texas. Last, but not least, God has blessed her with many great and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1-8 PM; and Thursday and Friday from 9:00 AM-8:00 PM in the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home, 710 S. Dewey Ave. Family will be present to greet friends on Friday from 6-8:00 PM.
Services will be held in the Greater First Baptist Church on Saturday, May 17, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Victor Paul officiating. Interment will follow in the White Rose Cemetery.
