Mr. Walter Samuel Goodson, 86, of Bartlesville, died at 7:45 A.M. on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, at the First Baptist Church in Bartlesville with Dr. Joe Fowler and Rev. Tom Cox officiating. Interment will follow at 1:30 PM in the AJ Powell Cemetery in Hominy under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in honor of Mr. Walter Goodson to the Native American College Fund and contributions may be mailed to 8333 Greenwood Blvd., Denver, Colorado 80221.
Walt was born on January 25, 1926 in Wynona, Oklahoma, the son of Charles and Nellie (Donnelly) Goodson. He attended school in Wynona and on July 15, 1948 he married Betty King. In 1950 Walter began a career as a butcher serving his apprenticeship at Dowdy's Grocery in Pawhuska. He worked at IGA Grocery, Almonds and Safeway stores before opening Walt's Meat Market in Hominy. After selling his shop, he worked in many different areas. He married Lenora Mae Gaines on May 16, 1992 in Wynona, Oklahoma. Walt was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bartlesville. He enjoyed woodworking, mowing other people's lawn as an act of kindness, traveling, fishing, picking wild berries, attending pow-wows, gardening, picking pecans and attending auctions. Walter had a servant attitude and always put others before himself. He will always be remembered as a kind and genial man who never met a stranger. If you ever met Walt Goodson, then you were automatically his friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Goodson; siblings, Beaulah Whitson, Mae Brock, Dorothy Compton and Clyde Goodson; two step-granddaughters, Carrie Frizzell and Angela Gaines.
Walt is survived by his wife, Lenora Gaines of the home; one daughter, Linda Goodson Smith of Tulsa; two step-sons, Roy L. Gaines and his wife, Ann of Bartlesville, John Gaines and his wife, Nelda, of Trinidad, Colorado; three grandsons, Carson Gaines and his wife, Becky, Brian Gaines and his wife, Charlotte, Jason Gaines and his wife, Jennifer; eight great-grandchildren, Maddison Gaines, Claire Gaines, Olivia Gaines, Braden Gaines, Alysa Gaines, Jared Gaines, Sydney Gaines and Skyler Frizzell; one sister, Irene Stickel; four nephews, Craig Stickel, Mike Goodson, Mark Goodson, Dillard Whitson and one niece, Clyda Ruth Franks.
