Arlan Ross Maker passed away Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012 at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Arlan attended grade school at Horace Mann Elementary. During his younger days, he was active in Scouting, first as a Cub Scout, then as a Boy Scout. Arlan attended Hominy High School and played on the football team. He was an outstanding football player and was very proud to be a Hominy Buck. Arlan was also a member of Mr. Tom Gray's famous marching bank where he played the trumpet.
After graduation, Arlan attended Northeastern Oklahoma Jr. College in Miami, OK, Haskell Jr. College (now Haskell Indian Nations University), Oklahoma State University Technical College in Okmulgee, Okla. and Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.
Arlan was a proud member of the Osage Tribe. He belonged to the Deer Clan. His Indian name was Wah-Sha-Hunka, meaning "First Son". He was given this name by his grandfather, Ross Maker. He was a former tail dancer on the Zon-zo-li District of the In-lon-ska. He was baptized in the Catholic Church, attended the Hominy Friends Church and was also active in the Native American Church.
He is survived by two daughters – Tina Maker and Elizabeth (Maker) Sloan and husband, Shayne, all of Pawhuska; four grandchildren – Christen Ballard; Jestin, Jayden and Jarrett Sloan; one great grandson – Jacob Ballard; A sister – Marguerite Ann (Maker) Freeman and husband, Joe, of Hominy; three brothers – John, Larry and Brent Maker, all of Hominy; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd George Maker; his mother Virginia Mae (Harding) Maker; a daughter, Virginia Marie Maker; a brother, Lloyd Patrick Maker, and a niece, Rachal Louise Freeman.
Rosary for Arlan was held Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Hominy Indian Chapel with Father Bruce Brosnahan officiating. Traditional Indian services were held Monday, Nov, 5, also at the Indian Chapel. Dr. Steven Pratt officiated. Funeral Mass followed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hominy. Father Brosnahan officiated. Interment was in the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery.
