Lewis Wendel was born August 14, 1918, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to parents H.J. Wendel and Hazel Krack Wendel. He graduated from Manitou Springs High School, Manitou Springs, Colorado in 1936. In 1940, he graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. His career with Phillips Petroleum Company began in 1940 at the Refinery in Borger, Texas. His employment with Phillips was interrupted from 1944 – 1946 when he served as a gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier U.S. CABOT. He returned to Philips Petroleum Co. and served as Plant Superintendent at the Borger Refinery and N.G.L. Process Center. In 1971, he was transferred to Kansas City where he was Refinery Manager. In 1973, he transferred to Bartlesville as Services Division Manager for Manufacturing department and left in 1975 to be Manager of the Teeside facility in Middlesborough, England. Lew returned to Bartlesville in 1979 as Administrative Manager Petroleum Products Group and retired from Phillips Petroleum Company in 1983.

Lew was a member of the First Methodist Church Dallas and The Aldersgate Sunday School Class. He has served in different Methodist churches as Trustee, on Administrative Boards, as Church School Superintendent, Church School teacher and in choirs. He served as President of the Independent School Board in Phillips, Texas and held many offices in Service clubs, Toastmasters International, and Boy Scout Councils. As a member of Kiwanis International, he served as Director and member on Community Services and Public Relations Committee. He, also, served as a Member of the Budget Review Committee of the Bartlesville Regional United Way.
His personal interests included trout fishing, travel and golf. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Knapp Wendel and son-in-law John Mandel. He is survived by his five children: Judith Wendel Banes and husband Fred from Dallas; Gary Wendel and wife Melissa from Montgomery, TX; Jill Mandel from Jersey Village, TX; Bart Wendel and wife Angie from Missouri City, TX; and Kyle Wendel and wife Gillian from Pinehurst, TX. Grandchildren include: Wendee McGee and husband Robert; Cory Banes and wife Armida; Nathan, Reese, and Ally Wendel; Bryce Lance; Lane Mandel and wife Katie; Jeff Mandel and wife Sarah; Cam, Drew, and Reagan Wendel; and Alie and Duncan Wendel. Great Grandchildren include: Kaylee and Kelsee McGee and Luke Mandel.
