Betty Higgins Obituary

Betty Louise (Keyhill) Higgins
Betty Louise (Keyhill) Higgins was born June 21, 1928, to James and Essie Keyhill, in Jefferson City, Missouri. She received the death she has wanted for several years, and passed peacefully on July 18, 2021. Betty did secretarial work until she married Wilson Weir Higgins in 1954. They made their home in Kansas City, Missouri, and were blessed with one child, Steven Leon Higgins, December 24, 1957. Steven was born with Down's Syndrome and Betty devoted her life to obtaining the best possible care for Steven which included moving to New Mexico, Hawaii and Oklahoma. Wilson passed away in 1999 and Steven in 2016. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by siblings, Thomas Keyhill, Lee's Summit; Lois Powell, Grandview; Sue Ellen Brown, Mississippi; Barbara Evans, Blue Springs, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Betty and Steven became residents of Truman Medical Center Lakewood in July 2012. The family thanks the entire staff of TMC for the excellent care they provided both Betty and Steven. Every TMC employee was kind, respectful and caring. Special recognition to outstanding nurses, Jeannie and Carolyn, who kept us well informed, even during COVID, and Mandy who was with Betty on both her first and last day at TMC. We are also grateful to Three Rivers Hospice who assisted Betty during her last months.
Per Betty's wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Betty will be cremated and her ashes interred with her husband and son in the Santa Fe New Mexico National Cemetery. If you wish to remember Betty, please donate to Truman Medical Center Charitable Foundation, National Down's Syndrome Society, Three Rivers Hospice or your favorite charity.
