Leon Francis Gilbert was born Thursday, Jan. 11, 1940, in a two room log cabin in the Saline County river bottom near Miami, Mo., to Francis Alexander and Marie Frances (Schowengerdt) Gilbert. He died at 74, on April 8, 2014 in Blue Springs, Mo.
Leon attended Levasy Grade School and Fort Osage H.S. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad from 1958 until 1991. In 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the Engineering Section, stationed in Germany. He was married March 3, 1961 to Annerose (Moll). Together they built a house in Levasy, Mo., and raised two children. They divorced in December 1971. January 11, 1974 Leon married Carla Kay Williams. In April 1991, Leon was elected Mayor of Levasy and serve one term, ran and won a second term but resigned in June of 1993. Then, they relocated to Wellington, Mo. In 1992 Leon started a truck hauling business. Leon loved hunting and fishing, traveling to many places to enjoy those sports. Leon was a member of Buckner VFW, Masonic Lodge in Buckner, the Ararat Shrine in Kansas City, the United Methodist Church in Napoleon and the NRA.
In addition to his wife, Carla, and his children, Leroy Francis Gilbert and Christine Jeanne Gilbert, he leaves 4 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, two sisters, Alma Jeanne Gilbert Best of Chamois, Mary Elizabeth Gilbert Potter of Blue Springs, and two brothers, Leroy Ernst Gilbert of Blue Springs and David Alexander Gilbert of Tucson, Ariz.
Visitation will be held at Speaks Buckner Chapel, Monday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service Tuesday, April 15, 11 a.m. at the Napoleon United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Higginsville, Mo. Donations can be made to the UMC in Napoleon, Missouri. Online condolences may be expressed at www.speakschapel.com

I am grateful for the life of Mr. Gilbert. Thanks to his service and to the service of others in our armed forces, my family and I have been able to lead our lives in freedom and peace.

leon was my neighbor in levasy mo. when i was a child. i rode the school bus with leroy and mary. they were good neighbors. the youngest boy, davie would ride his trike to our house singing,paladen, from have gu will travel. leon was in h.s. with my husband jay wilson. they graduated from the fort and we went to their reunions. we had good times and we will miss leon at our reunions. our sympathy goes to his wife, children and family. god bless you and our prayers are with you!
