Mary (Whipple) Stone passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at John Knox Village Hospice, Lee's Summit, Missouri.

Mary was born February 27, 1947, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to John and Grace Wellman Whipple. The family resided in the Agency, Iowa, area until 1957, when they relocated to Des Moines. Mary attended Lincoln High School, graduating in 1965, in the top 15% of her class. Mary married Merrill Derrington in 1965 and to this union, two children were born, Carrie and Kyle. Mary later married John Stone in 2010.

In 1973 the family relocated to Blue Springs, Missouri, where she's remained the rest of her life with the exception of a few years when she lived very close, in Independence, Missouri. Mary worked for the Blue Springs Police Department, Independence Power and Light, and finally as the Purchasing Manager for the City of Independence. Mary retired in 2013, after a 32 year career. She received her BS from Columbia College with honors in 1996; and she received her MBA from Ottawa University in 2002.

Mary was a member of Blue Springs First United Methodist Church since 1973, where she was involved in many activities, including serving as church secretary, treasurer, and as singles leader. In addition, she was involved in the initiation of the Mother's Day Out Program which started in the early 1970's. Mary was an avid bridge player and was involved in several different bridge groups. Mary was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter LE, where she served as treasurer.

Mary served with distinction in the two premier purchasing associations for government employees, MACPP (Mid America Council of Public Purchasing) and MAPP (Missouri Association of Public Purchasing). Mary was instrumental in the growth and success of both organizations; serving as MACPP Treasurer, Vice President and President, 2004-2006, respectively and MAPP Treasurer, Vice President 2008-2010 and again as MAPP President in 2011. Mary was named as Purchasing Manager of the Year by MACPP in 2006 and By MAPP in 2012. Mary was awarded the highly coveted Linda D. Windsor, Distinguished Service Award by MAPP in 2009; an award reserved for only a few distinguished, highly revered individuals whom have served above and beyond the call of duty. Mary was known for mentoring and supporting those members new to the purchasing profession and gave freely of her time and talents to the organizations and its membership, she will be forever missed in the Public Purchasing community.

Mary is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Carrie (Scott) Turner, son, Kyle
Whipple (KC Harrison); sister, Conni (Charles) Kimpston; three grandchildren, Zachary and Jordan Turner, and Kaydee Belanger; along with a niece and four nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Whipple; a brother; John Whipple II; and a nephew, Matthew Shedd.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
