Manon (Yahnig) Wheeler Obituary
Manon (Yahnig) Wheeler, 90, Independence, Mo., passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014.

Manon was born March 14, 1924, in Wilburton, Okla., the daughter of Henry and Florence (Hale) Yahnig. Manon was baptized into Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3), and was faithful throughout life to him in the Church he restored to the Earth in 1830. She graduated from Thayer High School and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. Manon received her B.S. and M.S. from CMSU and UMKC. During WWII, Manon was a machinist making aircraft parts at Curtis Wright Aircraft in St. Louis, and also at North American Aircraft in Kansas City, Kan. She taught elementary classroom students for eight years, including being a reading specialist. The last 15 years she spent as a counselor before retiring in 1988.

After retirement from Independence Public Schools, Manon volunteered at the Family Action Center in Kansas City, and the next five years volunteered at CPRS private school as a counselor. For the last twenty years, Manon has volunteered at Lunch Partners at the old William Chrisman High School, helping prepare food for the needy. Manon enjoyed teaching classes at church, and was a Cub Scout den mother and a wonderful story teller at vacation church school.

Survivors include her loving husband, David Wheeler; sons, Gary Wheeler and James Wheeler; daughter, Karen Brown (Dennis); grandchildren, Isaac Wheeler, Becca Whitaker (John), James Wheeler (Bree), Jared Wheeler, Matthew Brown and Aaron Brown; great-grandchildren, Karlee, Karter, Jackson and Dakota; sisters, Clara VanBiber and Dorothy Brockman; and brother, David Yahnig (Mary). David and Manon welcomed numerous friends into their home that became family. Among them, Chalia Castillo Moreira and husband, Plutarco, from Honduras, and their children, David, Melisa and Julie.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, July 30, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, 816-373-3600. Burial will follow at Mound Grove Cemetery.
