Fleta Mae Rand Obituary
Fleta Mae Rand, 92, Blue Springs, Mo., passed away Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at the Villages of Jackson Creek in Independence, Mo.

Fleta was born March 22, 1922, in Mayview, Mo., to Esther and Elbert Jennings. Fleta graduated from Mayview High School in 1940 and was honored as the valedictorian of the class. After graduation, Fleta worked for the Citizens Telephone Company of Higginsville, Mo., and then the Jones Store in Kansas City, Mo.

After having first met at a country school pie supper in 1930, Paul Rand and Fleta continued to date until on March the 14, 1942, they were married in Bremerton, Wash. At that time Paul was in the Navy, assigned to the aircraft carrier Saratoga. Over the next three and a half years they spent only a total of six months together before the war ended and they settled in Kansas City, Mo. In 1953, they moved to Lake Tapawingo, Mo., and joined the Blue Springs First United Methodist Church, where they remained active members throughout their lives.

Fleta was a member of UMW, Savannah Circle, PEO, and the Service Class Sunday school. Fleta was also active with her sons in Cub and Boy Scouts, and Blue Springs' first president of the American Field Service, a foreign student exchange program. In 1960, as a founding partner, Paul started Blue Springs Marine, where Fleta was the secretary and bookkeeper for over 23 years.

Survivors include son, Jim Rand and his wife, Nancy, son, Robert Rand, granddaughter, Carrie Siems and her husband, Jeff Siems, and grandson, Bentley Siems, her sister, Martha Sowers, and sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Rand.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs, with Dr. Sally Haynes officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. A private family burial will be at the Blue Springs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution designated for kitchen improvements, be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 301 S.W. Woods Chapel, Blue Springs, MO 64015.
