Irwin Lee "Jack" Umsted Obituary
Irwin "Jack" Umsted, 88, of Independence, Mo., passed away July 16, 2014.

A visitation will be held from 9-10:00 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. memorial service on Saturday, July 19, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO.

Jack was born June 3, 1926, in Davenport, Iowa, to Forrest Lee and Ida S. (Beckman) Umsted. He was the oldest surviving brother of 6 children. Jack served in the Army and Air Force as a radar specialist. He met his beautiful bride, Edith Else (Saar) in Germany, where they were married in 1952. He retired after 23 years, then moved to Independence, Mo., to work for the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired after 20 years. Jack was a member of the Masons, as well as a member of the American Legion. He will be remembered most for his sense of humor, love of family; especially his wife. Also for his distrust of squirrels on his property, love of the sun and being outside. Jack went to Arizona every winter with Edith, where they were able to visit with their daughter Lori and bask in the sun. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Edith Else Umsted.

Jack is survived by his three daughters, Patricia Roach and husband Bob of Liberty, Mo., Suzanne Graff and husband Hap of Lake Tapawingo, Mo., Lori Umsted of Chandler, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
