FAIRBORN Gerald (Jerry) Edward Schlafman, age 82 of Fairborn, died at his residence on Monday, February 18, 2013 after a long illness. Jerry was born August 16, 1930 in Dayton, Ohio, the son of the late Earl and Frieda (Staehlin) Schlafman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Schlafman. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley; a son, Gregory; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and David Stewart, and two grandchildren, Ian and Owen Stewart, of Milford, Ohio. Jerry was a graduate of Stivers High School and received Bachelor and Juris Doctor degrees from the Ohio State University. He served on the National Law Council of OSU for many years. Jerry practiced law in Fairborn for 42 years, serving as city solicitor and prosecuting attorney from 1970 until his retirement in 1998. Although dedicated to the law profession, he also found time to pursue an interest in music throughout his life. While a college student, he was a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band and continued his ties to Ohio State by playing in the Alumni Band (TBDBITL) after graduation. He was a percussionist in the Army band while in the service and was a member of the Antioch Shrine Brass Band, the Fairborn Civic Band, a Dayton Lawyers Band, as well as several dance bands. Jerry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fairborn, Fairborn Lodge #764 F&AM, the Antioch Shrine, and several legal associations. The family wishes to express appreciation to Grace Hospice of Dayton and to a special caregiver, Iris Hilgeman, for their compassionate care of Jerry during his illness. The family will receive friends on Thursday February 21, 2013 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M., with a Masonic service at 7:45 P.M., in the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn. A funeral service will be held on Friday February 22, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the First Presbyterian Church, 1130 Highview Drive, Fairborn, Rev. Thomas L. Harmon officiating. A private interment will be at Woodland Cemetery, Dayton. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to Grace Hospice of Dayton, 3033 Kettering Blvd, Suite 220, Moraine, OH 45439 -or- the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
