MacDonald, Mary A.
Mary Agnes (Kirby) MacDonald, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. She was born on June 16, 1923 in Dorchester, MA the third daughter and fourth child to Walter and Bridget (Henson) Kirby, who preceded her in death. A keen student with a bright mind, Mary was a trailblazer by obtaining her Juris Doctor (J.D.) law degree from the Portia Law School during World War II. After a scandal free stint with the IRS, on January 31, 1948 she married a man equal to her gifts, the late John E. MacDonald. Together they loved, laughed and journeyed through life raising their 9 children. Mary was a longtime Westport, CT resident and former member of the Patterson Club, the Westport Women's Club, numerous nine hole golf leagues and bowling leagues. She was a woman of deep faith and an active volunteer and member at St. Luke Church in Westport for nearly 45 years.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother Mary is survived by her nine children, son, John Jr.(Mary) of North Falmouth, MA, daughter, Susan (Tom) Spiro of Fairfield, CT, daughter, Joanne (Tom) Kennedy of Oswego, IL, son, Brian (Carol) of Southport, CT, son, Michael (Allison) of Glen Ridge, NJ, daughter, Mary Ann Brandell (Bill) of St. Charles, IL, son, Steve (Becky) of Lima, OH, daughter, Tish (Joe) Tacopina of Westport, CT, and daughter, Katy MacDonald of Fairfield, CT; 31 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A sister, Margaret (Peg) Weiler of Wayland, MA; a brother, Gerald Kirby of Quincy, MA; In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Joseph Kirby and a sister, Rita Thornton.
Friends may greet the family on Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 1-5 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. directly at St. Luke Church in Westport. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.
