Emma Womack Obituary

CARTHAGE - Mrs. Emma Burns Womack, age 93, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Sunday, March 25, 2012, in Carthage United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mattheue Locklear and the Rev. Marshall Old. Mrs. Womack was born to Robert Lee and Emma Muse Burns at their home in Carthage. She had four brothers, Howard, Robert, Edward and Paul, and one sister, Sarah, all deceased. Mrs. Womack received her undergraduate degree in English from Greensboro Women's College and her master's degree in guidance counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill. She thoroughly enjoyed a career of 37 years educating and helping high school students within the public school system. She taught at high schools in Kannapolis, Cameron, Carthage and Robbins. Leaving the classroom, she headed the guidance departments at the openings of both Union Pines and Pinecrest high schools. Mrs. Womack deeply loved her church. She served as choir director at Carthage United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Additionally, she was an accomplished soloist who sang at innumerable weddings and other events for many years. She married her high school sweetheart, Laverne Blue "Monk" Womack in 1941 and they remained dedicated partners until his death in 2004. They are survived by three sons and their wives, Gary and Monirah of Atlanta, Verne and Leslie of Laurinburg and Fred and Paula of Pinehurst; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carthage United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 70, Carthage, NC 28327, or the charity of one's choice. Online condolences may be made at PinesFunerals.com.
