FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Helen W. Clapp, 81, of Weatherford Road, died Thursday, July 25, 2013. Helen was born in Jackson, Miss., to the late Bonnie St. John and James Westerfield. Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a dear friend to all who knew her. She was a former registered nurse who graduated with a B.S. in nursing from Vanderbilt University
in 1954, which was the first year of the 4-year degree program. Helen was an avid golfer and an active member of the Fort Bragg LGA for 35 years. Helen became an Army wife when she married, and made many sacrifices as she relocated her family 10 times during her husband's career. Helen is survived by her husband of 58 years, Retired Army Lt. Col. Max A. Clapp Sr.; sisters, Barbara Briggs of Jackson and Bonitha Alice Morrow of Biloxi, Miss.; sons, Max A. Clapp Jr. of Merritt Island, Fla., and Michael C. Clapp and wife Sherry of Lexington, S.C.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Helen was preceded in death by her son, Mark St. John Clapp. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.
