REIDSVILLE - James Ronald "J.R." Humphrey, 69, of 205 McCollum Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County. A visitation celebrating the life of Mr. Humphrey will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Saturday Nov. 17, 2012, at Citty Funeral Home in Reidsville. A second visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Nov. 18, 2012, at Stoney Point Baptist Church, 6554 Rockfish Road, Fayetteville, followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. in the church cemetery with military graveside rites. A recipient of a donor kidney in 1998, Mr. Humphrey has been an active supporter of organ transplantation and the N.C. Kidney Association and was a past participant of the United States Transplant Games. He was a gold medalist at the 2009 World Transplant Games in Australia. An avid golfer, he carded three holes-in-one at Monroeton Golf Club. A longtime employee of the Rockingham County Governmental Center, he loved every minute of his time working there. In fact, one of his favorite sayings at work was "you gotta love it." Mr. Humphrey was also proud to be a veteran of the
U.S. Air Force. Mr. Humphrey was preceded in death by his mother, Bertie Worrell Culbreth; stepfather Worth Culbreth; and a brother, William Humphrey. A native of Buie, in Robeson County, Mr. Humphrey is survived by his wife, Nancy Collins Humphrey of the home; stepdaughters, Susan C. Coggins and husband Larry of Greensboro and Beth C. Pierce and husband Rick of Kernersville; stepgrandchildren, Bryan Russell and wife Leslie of Greensboro, Beth Williams and husband Lee of Stokesdale and Kristy Umfleet and husband Chris of Greensboro; great-stepgrandchildren, Paisley Russell, Taylor Williams, Tyler Williams and Daniel Umfleet; sisters, Ada Carol Owens and husband Jimmy of Hope Mills, Ethel Jackson and husband Neil of Fayetteville and Florene Bordeaux and husband Harold of Elizabethtown Mr. Humphrey was also blessed with a number of nieces, nephews and dear friends including Forest Walker, Joe Thompson, Phil Conte, Bob Mullins and Bernie Hudspeth, and many more too numerous to name. During his illness, Mr. Humphrey received the love and support of his friends and co-workers at the Rockingham County Governmental Center. The family wishes to express a special thanks for their friendship and the many get-well cards that were sent.
